A Philadelphia business ledger (ca. 1802) accompanies this lot. In the book, Samuel, James, Yeamans, and Thomas Gillingham are listed. The Gillingham family name was prevalent in eighteenth and ninetenth century. Research at Spruance Library in Doylestown has uncovered 27 Mary Gillinghams in this time period.
An interesting note: David Moon is also in the ledger and listed as Chairmaker. This is the Philadelphia Moon family who built Windsor chairs. David worked with his family - Samuel and William. David worked at 18 Carter's Alley.

Accompanying the lot is an ambrotype of Sarah and her daughter Anna taken in the 1850's. Sarah was born 18 August 1813 and died 25 January 1888. She married Arthur Cernea. Their daughter Anna was born 10 December 1854.
Also included in the lot is a small book - Domestic Portraiture of our Ancestors Kirkbride 1650-1824. Sarah's parents were John and Elizabeth Kirkbride. Their ancestor, Joseph Kirkbride, arrived in the Province of Pennsylvania with William Penn in 1682. |
